President warns Opposition over councils without mandate
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has issued a strong warning to opposition parties, stating that any attempt to hijack the public mandate given to the National People’s Power (NPP) will be met with stern action, reminding that he holds a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Addressing the 60th anniversary celebration of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in Colombo today (14), the President said the NPP has received the mandate to govern 267 local councils, with plans to establish control in 152 on the first day, and the remaining 115 soon after. Public Transport Vehicles Non-Compliant with Regulations
The National Transport Commission states that the majority of public passenger transport vehicles in the country are not compliant with regulations. The Commission highlights that, according to the Motor Transport Act, it is not permissible to modify lorry chassis into buses for operation. By 2022, the total number of buses in the country was 113,268. Of these, 19,862 buses were used for public passenger transport by the private sector, with 3,129 of them allocated for inter-provincial services. Annually, between 2,500 and 3,000 people die in road accidents, with 1,691 accidents involving buses occurring in 2022 alone. Gary Anandasangaree appointed Canadian Public Safety Minister
Tamil Canadian MP Gary Anandasangaree has been appointed today as the Minister of Public Safety in Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new Cabinet. He is the son of TULF senior V. Ananda Sangaree. Anandasangaree will oversee key agencies tasked with Canada’s national security, including the Canada Border Services Agency, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. He previously served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General — the first Tamil-Canadian to do so — under Carney’s first Cabinet in March. Pope Leo XIV appealed for no more war in a message to world powers during his first Sunday blessing at the Vatican. He called for a “lasting peace” in the Ukraine war, a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as welcoming Saturday’s agreement between India and Pakistan. He also recited the Regina Caeli prayer, in honour of the Virgin Mary, in his address to the crowd in St Peter’s Square.
